Re: [DIY] Re: Windows

Ok this is playing a game with my mind lol

Winter solar gain has confused me.
Will that allow the heat from the winter sun to warm up the room or not?

I think I would rather let the winter sun in to naturally warm... and hang sheers on that window in the summer.
Can you please explain the window thing so it doesnt mess up my brain power?

Thank you
Joyce

Hi Joan;

While that is very sound advice for most windows, Joyce
had specified South facing windows. For South facing windows,
Low-E glass will block more heating season Solar gain, than the
heat loss it will save. The net result is that standard double glazing,
(especially with about a 9/16" to 3/4" gap, and argon fill) will be
more energy efficient than using Low-E glass, for South facing
windows.     As you astutely pointed out, standard glass will also
allow more Summer heat gain, so if there is a lot of window area,
and no shading or other heat control solutions, and especially in
a very sunny and warm climate like your Arizona, then it may still
be advantageous to use Low-E, even though it is not seasonally
(heating season) as energy efficient as standard glass, for South
facing windows.
