Patrice: I reread your post - Are you asking the question "Is there more support w diagonal?" I'll answer that as if you are asking that as a question.
The underlayment; either boards, plywood material, concrete board or ditra are almost always parallel to the walls - The up-and-down movement of the underlayment is always going to be at those joints like when you walk on them. If your tile joint falls near one of those movement points the grout is going to crack. Laying the tile on the diagonal spreads the load from one underlayment board to the next and minimizes the shearing movement, gives the tile support on multiple boards and minimizes the shear on the grout joint.
