As for the honey bees (Apis Mellifera) when they swarm, they are not “moving the nest” they have left a portion of the hive at the old location and are looking to set up another shop elsewhere. Unlike wasps and hornets, a single honey bee queen does not go out and start a new colony, she needs worker sisters to build the hive. Another factoid, male honey bees(drones) have no stinger, cannot collect food, cannot make wax or honey and must be fed by the workers, which is why in the fall, the colony will begin to push out the drones to die as they do not need them to overwinter and put a burden on the stores of pollen and honey that have to last all winter, and they eat a lot as the colony has to keep the hive warm to stay alive. Had a duck once that could tell the drones by sight and would sit outside the hive and catch them as they tried to get back in, she missed a couple of times and got a worked, now that was funny…

All wasps, hornets, and yellow jacket nests (with honey bees being the only exception) die going into the winter. The pregnant queen abandons her nest and “hibernates” over the winter until the next spring. If you ever get a new nest in the same location as a previous year, it’s only coincidental. Honey bee nest continue on throughout the winter but do move the nest from one location to another from time to time.
