[DIY] Re: how do I stop my bathtub from dripping water

you say this is in the upstairs bath. that means you should/probably have a shutoff in the lower level. check where the water pipe enters the house; it will come in on the same side of the house as the water meter is in the yard. there should be a manual shutoff there, unless the builders/plumbers (like most) saved $5 and didn't put one in. if you find the pipe, and don't have the shutoff, it would be well worth your while for the future to have a plumber put one in if you can't do it yourself.
you shouldn't need special tools to change a valve on any faucet. they are made fixer/user friendly for that reason. BUT, don't buy the cheap replacement. go back with the original mfg part. and i would use the faucet grease for the valve and teflon tape on the rest of the threads. makes life a lot easier to reinstall. put a few layers of masking tape on the chrome nuts and you will keep from scratching up your chrome with the wrench.
this really is a diy project.

I have unscrewed it even took out the U clip. When I used my pliers to pull the valve the water comes back on. Is there a special tool I need and do I need to turn off the water to the house and also if I need to turn off the water to the house where would I do that at? Thanks If there is anything else you can advice me on I would appreciate it. The leak is making me insane and my water bill has gone up.
