Spam is the sending of unsolicited invitations to visit web locations or to purchase unwanted products and in most cases are screened at the server and deleted or quarantined. Virus's, Trojans, and Worms are snippets of software which can be placed on ones computer hard drive and which can perform all manners of mischief. Spam is usually no more than an aggravation while the others will usually be caught and blocked by the users firewall. One of the ways to minimize Spam is to occasionally clear all of the "Cookies" that have been stored by visited web-sites. This capability is found as a part of the tools section of the browser being used. Almost all of the latest firewalls will detect viruses, worms and trojans alerting the operator of their presence and blocking their insertion into the machine. I have used Avast for several years but my new machine came with McAfee already installed so I'm presently giving it a try. I have as yet to get my first damaging virus with these new modern firewalls.
