[DIY] Re: Side w/ neighbor

Step #1, find out what was killing the trees you removed. It could end up killing off the new plantings too.

Step #2, take photos of the area at various times of day. You need to get a good sense of how much light, wind, water will affect the area.

Step #3, visit the local nurseries and any Gardens in your area, browse your neighbors' yards for ideas too. Take your photos with you, so you can discuss plants with the nursery. Take your camera so you can snap and review what you like, and discuss later with the nursery.

Zones 5&6 are much further north than I'm really knowledgeable. I'm fond of holly bushes and trees as they don't go naked in winter snow. I think podocarpus (Japanese Yew) will do well there also, they don't go naked either, so no clean up.

Two things I adore from our time in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia are Japanese Maple trees, and large beds of Iris. The maple will require leaf raking, but the color compensates. The Iris will add color in the spring/fall depending on variety, and then lush grassy texture as background to any foreground plantings. Iris will need to be dug up, thinned out and replanted maybe every other year. Allow the Iris to die back naturally in winter, before you cut off the tops. This will nourish the roots and encourage strong growth for next season.

hope this helps. DJ

> Oh sorry im in Zone 5-6. We removed a ton of trees on the line- many dying. So now there is a fence and as I say they are 6" higher atleast cause they built up their lot but without regard of my lot, put their impervious drive against the line of my property only 6' away from the house. So we have created a small curve in that 6' and sodded and theres the fence. Its surely more attractive, But will it stand up to time and protect the home from drainage. If you are knowledgeable on hardy perrenials for my zone I would love more tips. I prefer low maintenance (water/pruning), blues and yellows are main colors. And any hardscape ideas are great too.
