start out 2-7/8" at the bottom and changes dimensions about every 10'. Actually now it's only about 44' tall.
A hurricane, I don't recall which one, bent the 3/4" portion at the top and I cut it down at that time. Since then it has survived quite nicely. I know most DIYer's don't have the ability to do a project like this but just know it's possible.

I would advise against attaching a pole to the chimney. Chimneys are built to support their own weight. A strong wind, an anchor comes loose, and, you replace the chimney, instead of just the pole. BAD IDEA.
