This is similar to the situation with beggars wanting a dollar to get something to eat. I saw someone go up to someone asking for such and he told him that he would not give him cash, but instead took him into a restaurant and bought him some food.
As I usually ride mass transit including going to the grocery store, I am waiting for someone to come up and ask me for money to buy some food. I will then open my shopping bag and offer food.

When I first got married I thought it was a nice idea to get my MIL a gift card at Macy's for some occasion. Little did I realize that it was her habit to buy something inexpensive at the store and then get cash for the rest of the value of the gift card. I guess years ago they did that. I was mortified once I found out, and never gave her anything of value again except cash once I understood her mindset. She would cash in anything else I got her, selling it at ridiculously low prices! LOL! And recently finding that she is giving cash we gave her which we thought she needed to her degenerate son, my husband's younger brother, we don't give her cash at all. We take her out to eat instead when we see her.

Sears isn't the first place I'd shop for jewelry but was the only place in town I could find a pendant that said GrandMother.  (Who knew jewelry shops didn't stock "family" jewelry?) It was expensive but I had shopped all day and was tired.  They didn't even have a case for it so I came home, put in on a chain and tried it on.  It looked more like inexpensive costume jewelry than what I'd paid for it so I returned it the next morning - only to find out Sears didn't give refunds.  You could return it but only for credit on another purchase.  I was not happy!  Since it was more than I had intended to pay to start with, I ended up sending the credit slip, along with a letter of apology, to my DIL, suggesting maybe Sears on the west coast would have a better selection.
