Re: [DIY] Oscillating tools & Routers

I have three routers plus an old Craftsman I bought over 40 years ago out in the shed which I think I will dig out mount in the table my band saw is setting on, it happens to be a defunct table saw with a router mount on one end.  My favorite and most used router is also my cheapest one and about I fear to go away if I can't find new bearings for it.  It is an old B&D and has one feature I really like.  The power switch is a slide button that protrudes through the top of the router case and all I have to do is flip it over and sit it on its top to shut down between operations.  No slide switch to fumble around to find and no trigger switch to force me to use one particular hand grip.

It's not labeled on-site or on box as reconditioned so I assume they are just closing it out for either a newer model or just flat out discontinuing the kit.  I'm surprised it's still available as it has been at this price for a couple of weeks now.

Routers.  As I was buying my 1st router, I did a lot of forum searching and saw many people stating that it's best to have a couple of routers on hand.  I had never used a router before but found the thought of buying two of the same tool a bit of overkill and a waste of money.  Now that I've used the router for some projects, I see exactly what they are talking about (and wish I had another router).  It's much more convenient to have one attached to the router table as well as to have the other freed up as a hand router.  Or as I'm sure you've experienced, sometimes you have to change out bits/collets/adapter plates and such several times if you are working on joints and whatnot.  As ridiculous as it sounds it does become tedious and time consuming and really pushes the breaks on momentum of a project.

I'd say that for $50.00 it is either as you say heavily discounted, overstock or reconditioned, none of which bother me in the least.  I'll probably be sending off an order to HF next month for a couple of items and a vibrating saw will be one of them.  I've just about convinced myself that I need one more router, this time with a 1/2 inch collet so that I can take advantage of some of my shaper cutters.  HF has a nice looking unit for under 60.00 and their quality has really improved in the last 20 years since I first started buying from them.  I'm about to find out how good some of the vibrator cutters I bought from them are too and if worth their weight in salt I'll get some more at about 25% of others asking prices.

I haven't used mine yet but I got this recently which seems to be heavily discounted compared to other sites.  $50 plus free shipping...

on a subject more to the groups reason, has anyone used or have one of the
oscillating multi-tools and whats your opinion of it. worth the cost or a
seldom used tool that can be done without. B&D as one for about $40 that
seems durable and accessories are reasonable.
