if the unit is 14 years old, has it ever had the compressor changed in it? as compressors age, the insulation on the windings inside the compressor begins to break down causing the compressor to short out internally. generally, low gas in the unit will show itself as freezing coils. the newer high efficiency units will pay for themselves due to lower operating costs

Our AC has been working fine for a while (the furnace motor had to be replaced a year ago, the unit is 14 years old). However, this afternoon it stopped working.
