Yes, they were called boilers. Lots of homes did not have hot water heaters but rather used a hot water coil in the boiler and the boiler was left to run year around. Just as with the tankless systems now, one set of controls maintained the water temp of the boiler and the main stat turned the circulating pomp off and on to heat the house. Modern tankless heaters are activated when ever the controls see fluid movement through the tankless lines, hence turning the circulating pump off and on effectively controls the entire system. On radiant systems the tankless temp is set at the limit at which the slab is want to be maintained for example around 100 degrees. The user can choose to maintain either the building temp or the slab temp of both can be programmed into the system as well.
