Hot air heat systems are engineered on the basis of total room air flow...
With your return air register in the master bedroom, it is the beginning
of the system.....Your heat vents in the same room appear to be the
end of the system which is delivering the coolest air.....With the door
open you have complete air balance and the return air register is
receiving warmer air from a hallway perhaps....With the door closed
the return air register is receiving the coldest air from the end of the
system.....I suspect that a temperature reading of the vent air in the
master bedroom, taken with a probe type kitchen thermometer held
in place with some tape, will be lower than other downstream heat
vents in the house.....The problem is air circulation.....Pumps
