If the finish is in good shape and they are just dirty, try a commercial hardwood floor cleaner. Bona is an excellent brand. If the finish is in bad shape, the floors will need to be sanded and refinished, something I would definitely contract out. If the floors are 50 years old, I assume they are solid wood, as opposed to the engineered wood floors that most people install these days. Refinishing engineered wood floors is probably a lost cause because they just have a thin veneer of hardwood on the surface.
