Re: [DIY] Tiny Houses

Live upstairs, downstairs, build a tiny house next door?  The back pain I developed the first week we moved in had evidently been developing for years and the exertion of moving was the final straw.  Surgery is not an option.  All our plans for the house and property are out the window, and we have to decide how best to go forward.  If we make the upstairs our home, we have to install a stairlift, between $5 & $10K.  The best option, I think, is finishing the downstairs as our main living area, and keep the upstairs for guests etc.  It's also the most expensive.  That's where the tiny house question comes in, should we spend the same amount and build a small one-bedroom home, and leave the barn as a barn/workshop.

Selling isn't an option at this point and we love the property.  Each solution has it's own problems, the windows upstairs and the stairs themselves.  Being able to insulate/heat & cool and finish, the approx 900' of new living area downstairs, for a reasonable dollar amount.  Could we even build a small cabin style home for under $20,000?

It's a major decision and I'd like to have as much information and as many viewpoints as possible - hence all my recent questions.  So, thanks for adding your feedback.  We're in SW MO.

I see some small Home Depot sheds with a small porch that one of our neighbors stays in while he clears the land.  I feel he will eventually build a home.  It is very sweet to see it tucked into the back wooded corner of his land. So much fun to see it coming along so nicely.  Some people live in an RV while building their home.
