First of all most A Frames are built with such a slope that snow will never
accumulate on it because the roofs are so steep. Getting to your specific
question, the method of insulation depends entirely on the current structure
of the roof. Apparently you have some kind of roof material that is applied
to plywood. I am wondering if that is the total extend of your roof construction.
ie. from inside the structure when you look up do you see plywood ?
If not, perhaps there is some kind of sheathing or covering over the
interior ceiling framework and if that is the situation then there might
be a space where you can add some insulation. In any case it is a kindergarten
question, either you add insulation on top of the roof, inside the roof structure,
or beneath the roof structure. In order to determine what is best for your
situation, you must explore what can be done with adding the various kinds of insulation to these 3 various locations and you then determine what is best
in terms of cost, difficulty ( labor), and ensuing results as far as increased
overall average R factor of insulation. I am a big fan of spray in closed
cell urethane foam insulation because of the effectiveness in reducing
future energy costs. However, this is usually the most expensive approach
and may require occupation for ten or fifteen years in order for the energy
savings to pay for this most expensive approach.
I built a house 17 years ago and the technique I chose to minimize my cost
of this approach was to actually purchase the equipment necessary for me
to do the work myself. The equipment was expensive but I was able to immediately save some money by acquiring the spray in foam at wholesale
cost.
Furthermore where you live makes a big difference in your calculations
such that if you live in an extreme 40 below Alaska vs mild Atlanta, Ga.
Tell us how your AFrame is constructed and whether you had a hand in
its creation or you just bought it finished.
