[DIY] Re: baseboard heating valve

If as you now say, you have a steam system, you shouldn't have to manually operate the "valve" at all.

Each radiator must be equipped with a quick-vent valve. These valves automatically open, letting air out, until they sense the higher temperature of steam. Once the steam is sensed, they close automatically.

Some quick vent valves are adjustable, based upon temperature and time.

Radiators which are the furthest away from the boiler need a longer time to bleed the air with each heating cycle. Their quick vents should be set to open later than radiators nearest the boiler.

If your quick vent valves are not operating automatically, they should be replaced, not operated manually. If your building management won't replace them, you can find them on eBay. Home Depot also has a limited selection of steam quick-vent valves.

Question: You say that you have baseboard heat? If your system is truly steam your baseboard radiators must be cast iron, not the typical hot water baseboard radiation which is lightweight finned copper/aluminum baseboards. Lightweight finned copper/aluminum baseboard radiation can not take the temperature stress of steam heat.  Cast iron baseboard radiation has been used with hot water systems aside from steam systems but it is unusual and expensive.

I developed a fair amount of expertise working on steam systems in old houses here in Connecticut. Steam heating is a lost art in most areas.

Doug. Thanks for the info. I do know it is a steam system. So leaving the valve open seems correct????

After that, the valve must be closed? I'm talking about the little valve that I can turn counter clockwise to open by hand.
