[DIY] Re: Baseboard Heating Valve

The fact that this is a steam system changes the advice completely. These do not have a manually controlled valve to leak water out of the system. What they have instead is called an air valve.  The air valve is an automatic valve that stays open when it's cold and closes when it gets hot. This is in the middle or top of the radiator. When the system goes on and the steam starts coming in, the air valve stays open to allow all the air to vent out. As soon as the system is completely filled with steam the air valve is supposed to close. Air valves go bad sometimes and you can buy replacements at hardware stores if you live in an area like New York City with lots of steam heat systems. Otherwise you may have to go to McMaster Carr or some other online place.

There is also a valve at the bottom of steam radiators to turn the radiator on or off.  This valve should always be either completely open or completely closed.  It is not used to regulate the heat.
