Re: [DIY] Heath Zenith Model SL-4110-OR

The manual said that the motion sensor works with heat.
Usually, it's a difference in heat.
That's partly why it wants a minute and a half to warm up,
and reach some homeostatsis...

The tape may work, blending all surrounding heat.
If not, try a layer of aluminum foil, shiny side out, and
clear tape. Reflect the radiaited heat. Have a shiny
poptart wrapper? Do a test.

And as said, sensor set to minimum.

You remind me, I have one to repair for my MIL.
Thanks a lot... ;>)

Re: [DIY] Entry door lock - orientation

Problem is as you describe.
Issue is Brand Differentiation.
BOTH want you to ONLY use their product.
Potentially, one has claimed an orientation as a product trademark.
I BET you cannot swap the orientation, readily.

One says, a vertical shows a blockage.
The other says it looks like a bar across an old door.
Both, make sense.
Both types are weak at the trim/latch-strike.

I prefer Schlage, and usually in my suburbs, and usually,
do not lock my door, but have recently added the old 2x4
cross-member and brackets. And may beef THAT up.
If I'm away... Ok. But if I'm in, their being unable to get in,
may save their lives. Gettin' old, and really tired of paperwork.

Lots of info here. Didn't pay much attention to this topic. Security lights are all unique to the manufacturer and all have special tricks to work with them.

Re: [DIY] Entry door lock - orientation

Hi...no, have not resolved it yet.  I'm pretty sure, that the "inside" door knob has only one possible orientation for the flat tab to go in.   I will give it another look.  Thought that there may be some other trick.

Puzzles me that "engineers" in one lock company could come to an opposite conclusion, as to orientation of the locking tab.  I MUCH prefer the vertical position to indicate "locked".

Maybe I'll call the folks at Schlage and let them know how I feel :-)

Re: [DIY] Entry door lock - orientation

That is one nice things about living in the sticks, we seldom ever lock our doors except at night, and even then some are left unlocked.  Never did lock doors when we left the house while we lived in the country, always figured that if someone wanted in I'd only have a door to fix when we came home.

We had the house rekeyed when whe moved in and all the doors keyed alike, only one key to worry about.  Now the new one has a different key and it's much larger than the other key.  I'm wondering how much it would cost to have this one lock re-keyed to match the others.  This key is so obviously a door key I don't like to carry it, and since DH has a habit of locking the laundry room door when I'm gone, which is the entry from the garage, I have to carry two keys in addition to the car key and remote.  Minor item but irritating for me.

Hi All,

Not sure I got the subject right, but it's as close as I can.

I have two entry door locks. One is Schlage, the other QuickSet. Both have key on outside and one of those things you turn in door knob, to lock from inside.

Here's my problem...both have to be oriented differently to lock from inside. One is locked with the center thing being vertical, the other horizontal. Would like to set both the same way, so I can tell, by looking if they are locked.

Makes sense to me, that vertical should locked, just like ball valves, and horizontal should be unlocked.

Of course, I could just install another lock, but that's too easy :-)

Regards...

Re: [DIY] fuel filter

If this is the type of filter where the fuel line pushes into the filter and snaps in, you'll need to get a tool, Plastic or metal from the auto parts store, that you put over the line, press in and releases the lines from the filter. The auto parts store or a good Repair manuel checked out from the library, or info online, should be able to guide you.

I think I need to replace the fuel filter on my 2003 Ford Ranger. Any suggestions as to the best way to do this?

[DIY] Re: Entry door lock - orientation

You may be able to remove the inside knob and turn it to desired orientation and reattach. There is a flat bar that inserts into the knob and some (knobs) have a + configuration allowing you to turn it 90 degrees and reinsert the bar.

Re: [DIY] Heath Zenith Model SL-4110-OR

True, the value of this fixture is mostly in the fixture's appearance instead of the motion sensor quality. However, the fact that it says motion is best detected across path instead if head-on is typical of all motion sensors.
You can make it stay on all night by flipping the wall switch on, off, then back on in rapid succession. This will only work for the 1 night, then it will be back to normal operation the next night.
Covering the sensor window with tape would likely also block the photocell and cause it to stay on in the daytime.
If on all night and off in the day automatically is your desire, get a different fixture with a photocell built in, not motion sensor.

RE: [DIY] Heath Zenith Model SL-4110-OR

There is no way that the sensor is that good, especially when it states that
if you walk towards it, it is not very sensitive, that it works best when
something crosses it's path, I would try just try a "cheap" piece of black
electrical tape over the sensor with the sensitivity on lowest setting.

Hi...looked at the Manual, but did not see that option. There's a number
for Support, so may want to call and ask if it's possible. Again, they say
it's not a repairable, so doubt you can modify it.

Motion detection uses infra red, so blocking it would work. Not sure what
your budget is, but look here:
