When we built a new home in '85 we only put in a wood stove. DH kept it banked just enough so he could get it going fast when we got home and in the mornings. Those were also the days he would bring me coffee in bed while the house was warming up since he left for work earlier than I did. I always loved the "homesteading" arts, even churned butter when we had access to the cream and, while I have fond memories, I wouldn't want to have to do it again. But, as you say Dale, we could if we had to. That's a good feeling in this economic situation. It might take us a lot longer than it used to but we could do it. DH has a book called Five Acres and Self-Sufficiency, it was an old book when we got it but lots of good information that would still be practical today.

Gardens were a failure this year, but Momma did manage to put up 90 quarts of delicious Michigan peaches. We do not miss heating totally with wood and coming home to a cold house in the dead of winter, but we could do so again if we needed to.
