Just a thought, but do you have a solenoid before the pump?  These are supposed to prevent gravity fuel feed from the tank, and if they do not shut immediately can cause secondary ignition in a hot burner.

the tank filter is brand new, air filter is about 3 years old. I pulled the nozzle, and it was clean. No junk in the brass screen. The nozzle is about 10 years old. It just baffles my why it only happens just before it should shut off.
