Q. There is a switch for an exhaust fan on the opposite wall with at least 8' of solid wall between the shower and the tub. Is the exhaust switch the right type and/or would it be feasible to run an outlet off this switch, below it a couple of feet?
A. It may be possible to drop a receptacle from the switch, depending on how the cable runs. Guess someone has to open the switch box and determine that.
Q. What's involved in the ones I see advertised that need no wiring - and do they actually work?
A. Lights yes, but they are battery operated. I do not know of any receptacles that work w/o cables :-)

PS There are ways to get small amount of power "through the air", as in electric toothbrush battery chargers, but you could not run your hair dryer from that, unless it was a very big air core transformer :-)
