Re: [DIY] Supplemental Furnace

The pellet stove you mention is my daughters and came with the house.  So far this winter she has gone through almost 3 tons of pellets at 200.00 a ton, but I suspect she is not being as prudent with how she is heating as she might be.  I say this because her unit is set where the heat can go right up an open stairway which she has not attempted to drape or block since her two teenagers have their rooms upstairs.  Pellet stoves are not cheap and hers supposedly cost the original purchaser about 3500.00 when new which was 2 years prior to her buying the home.  The literature that came with the stove says it weights 400 lb and I'm sure that may be a conservative estimate as I have tried to move it about an inch or so.  I am actually mulling the thought of getting one for ourselves if for no other reason than an alternate heat source and the esthetics of watching the flames.

Hey Dale,

Some time back you talked about a pellet furnace (stove) and your new cooking stove; both in the same post, if I remember correctly. I'm interested in both, but want to concentrate on the furnace for now, just as a matter of time constraint.

You wrote of a pellet stove; I'm assuming you wanted to use pellets as wood is not readily/cheaply available. Wondering if the furnace is outside or inside, and whether you found it difficult to install or not. Curious about how you picked the brand you would install.

I have a friend whose house is small. She has a fireplace insert installed that actually heats the whole house as long as she has a cheap supply of wood. Right about now, that's sounding good.

Interested in your feedback.

Thanks, Christine - Mpls
