We had stains that could not be fully removed. Not certain what caused them. My wife used acetone nail polish remover. With rubbing, the stains were no longer visible. But about two months they came back. She followed the same procedure again, and now after a year, the stains are still not visible.
If you try this method, using acetone, test it first on a small area, wait a few weeks to ensure the carpet is not damaged.
