Re: [DIY] Electric Problem

Thank you Jan.

I talked to the electric company about our bill and they offered a payment plan.No other suggestions.

I have records of our electric bills going back to the 70's and the usage was extreme. We did not have excessive  cold.

We are strongly suspecting that one or 2 of our water heaters have gone bad. Usually they quit. We also have a 10 gallon heated water tub that could be the culprit.

When the weather warmed up a couple weeks ago  we unplugged all  water heaters or heated water holders.  There has been little kilowatt useage since unplugging  everything

We do get a chart  with every bill that shows the usage for the previous 12 months

Thank you for the suggestions

Can't help with your question re testers but have you thought about checking with your electric company to see how much the increased usage actually was?  i.e., how many more watts did you use over this same time last year - or even last month.  Did you have a longer/colder than normal freeze (like we did) so they were running almost constantly.  Are they on the same outlet, maybe it's bad.  The two times we've had a big increase was when we had a rate change and the other time the meter was faulty so they adjusted the bill.

Our electric bill  this month jumped  from $78 to $258

By process of elmination...watching the  wheel spin on the meter while plugging and unplugging things, we decided that the two water heaters in the stock tanks may have gone bonkers.  Not 100% sure

Are there things made that we can use to test electrical  items  to see  how much  they are pulling? What are they called and where can they be purchased?
