Do you have natural gas? They make a compact direct vent wall heater that would look nice and be very cost effective to operate. However, it would probably be a $1000 project if you have to run a gas line very far.
Although electric heaters are very expensive to operate, it may be a good option if the room is indeed to be used as a den and only a few hours per day (not to sleep in or during the day when at work). As mentioned by another reader, it will take a larger electric heater than a portable or 120 volt heater.
