Re: [DIY] floor joists

why not replace with the same size as before? saves having to re-level to other floors. if more support is needed due to the weight of the water heater and stuff to be stored, double the joists and subfloor

If you are going to get a permit, ask the building inspector.

Otherwise, for that span, 2x4 or 2x6 will do fine.

Use blue treated lumber. It is resistant to all insects, including termites, mold, mildew, etc.

Yes, pilot drill, use hangers, and screws. Use gold anodized deck screws.

I need to replace some floor joists. the span is about 5-6 feet, it was a porch closed in and now has my water heater and storage. what size lumber do I need for the joists? it should be interesting, the sill plate is very old and hard as a rock so I'm thinking joist hangers with screws will be my best bet. there is a very small crawl space underneath.

tips? advice?
thanks
