You might be able to use 3/8 PVC. Or, use 1/2 or 5/8 rebar.

Thanks Ray.  I did test with 1/4" pvc but I figured it would have too much play in it (too much room for the bricks to shift), not to mention 1/4" is fairly easily bendable (at least the type I have).  I guess I had imagined burying the pvc into the ground a few inches to keep them from shifting.  I'm going to price rebar.
