Hi Jeffrey
"UV" (ultra violet light) has nothing to do with energy
absorption and reflectance, in any direct sense. UV does
deteriorate some surfaces over time, but UV is only a tiny
portion of the energy coming from the sun, so Solar heat
gain is virtually all about "visible light" Energy Star
roofing is all about reflecting "visible light" In other
words, it is about "color". The Energy Star standards
are really quite mild, for sloped roofs (>2/12). They are
that the roof must initially reflect 25% of the light,
and 15% after three years. That allows for even fairly
dark colors to qualify. As with many of the modern
Energy Star programs, is seems to be severely skewed
toward southern climates, favoring cooling (even giving
away money for unimpressive performing products, such
as quite dark roofs), and totally ignoring the advantages
of passive Solar heating in cold climates.
