Phil: I'm not sure but I think you're probably correct. The Maple is very much alive and healthy but this is the circular "scar" where the limb was cut off and that area is, for sure, dead wood. The tree is regrowing around the edges of the scar quite nicely but the center part is where the carpenter ants got into the wood.

"Wired" suggested asphalt "Tree Wound Dressing" which I'm going to get immediately. FYI, the insect killer "Tempo" that I used to kill the ants is simply amazing - It's fairly expensive but mixes with water and makes a bunch. I've had one little container for 6-8 years and still have some left. I use it for anything that crawls - Inside and out - We only spray inside, sparingly, if we are going to leave the house for a few days and then air the house out when we return.
