The simplest treatment and cheapest is Baking Soda. 1 box per week is all you need. You can even sign up on Arm & Hammer's web page (or used to could) to get regular reminders to do so via E Mail.
I have read that other than this, you do not need to do anything else as long as you avoid chemicals in the drain. Someone said that Rid-X is actually harmful because it sends a gooish substance out to the leaching field and stops it up.
I had a septic tank for 2 years and never had any problems only occasionally using Baking Soda.
