1 inch works better. Had a few tools like that when the boys were still home. Had one son who would over reach with the splitting maul when he got tired of splitting fire wood and break the handle. I replaced the handle with one of the fiber glass units and was watching out the north window as he once again tried his magic. I tell you that maul rang his bell big time and he was still vibrating several hours later. I think after nearly 30 years that maul is still out in the shed with its handle yet firmly in place.
