wood will warp with heat and humidity, metal won't. any flexing of the supports will cause the door to bind and possibly over-torque the drive motor.

Why do the instructions always show metal angle iron to secure an opener to the garage ceiling? I think I could make wood fit a lot better. The metal is always getting connected at an angle.
