It will stain/ protect best with cleaning, but you can buy a foaming cleaner that will remove the graying and black mildew and restore original color, and use a regular hose/ scrub brush and you can clear coat get a "Honey" color transparent stain/ protector that will get it back very close to the original, or you can change to "cedar" for an orange tint (and "redwood" for a (darker) red color

I had a pergola made about three years ago. The carpenter used treated outdoor wood. I really don't know what kind. Now that I'd like to stain it I wonder if it has to be pressure washed because it has turned a little grey. Can you stain without cleaning it?
