The connection is made via a spring        action holding contact to the wire.  It can get weak from use and        fail.
This is the same effect as a circuit breaker getting loose where it plugs onto the bus bar.

Once a solid gauge 14 wire is properly inserted and "locked"
into the back of a wall receptacle, I can see no instance of "wear and tear"
on the connection.....Pump
