unless you have a lot of high wattage lights on at once, you have other problems if you plug in something like you mentioned and you consistently blow a breaker. breakers do wear out. i replace mine if it trips more than 2x in a day. unless my wife tripped it, then i check it myself..
since amps times volts = watts a 15 amp circuit at 120 volts has a capability of 1800 watts (120x15) but circuit should never be loaded above 80% so you really only have 1440 watts available. so, simply add up all "the plugins" and you have your answer. and remember, if the lights aren't on, they don't count, only what is "turned on".
i personally am switching to LED's to simplify this matter
a 100 watt incandescent bulb = a 25 watt CFL = 18 watt LED. all for the same 1600 lumens. you just have to pay more in the beginning for the LED's.. and they do go on sale...
having LED's over our dining room table got rid of a LOT of heat during the evening meal. bathroom is next on the change over list.
