Re: [DIY] Re: Electric outlet fails; tell me what to do and I'll do it (carefully)

Outlets do wear out.  I would turn off the breaker. Take the wires off the outlet. Alligator clip the wires to a radio plug, radio turned way up so it can be heard at the breaker box or a test light socket with a helper who can yell to the breaker box.  Turn on the breaker and see if your device works.

A 69 cent outlet will wear out but last quite awhile.  Or you can spend $5.00 for a commercial outlet.  I have one of these in my garage.  It really grips your plug and takes a strong pull to unplug.

Yes I tape around the outlet to insulate the wire connections and tape my wire nuts.

Electricity is no more dangerous than driving.  You have to know and follow certain rules. A home owner wiring book from the box store will usually give good guidance.  Your library if your friend here.

A twenty two year old house should have a polarized outlet.  If not the hot (black) wire goes on the short slot.  The neutral (white) wire goes on the longer slot.  The green or bare wire goes on the green lug screw and conducts to all metal surfaces. Pretty much all outlets available today will be polarized as a safety feature.

Unless you are a completely non mechanical individual you can do this.
