Depending on the type and make of gate valve that you have it may or may not be possible to disassemble, clean, and repair it. Regardless, if it is the main shutoff valve for your house water supply, do you have access to a water shutoff valve  prior to it so that you would still be able to shut off water flow and not waste a lot of water while you open the line and  repair or replace the valve?

If I replace the valve the ball valve is the answer.  BUT if I can clean the gate valve without removing it, the job gets a LOT simpler.  My concern is damage to the water pipe while I try to take the gate valve apart.
Has anybody pulled apart a gate valve while it was still installed?
