okay, I don't think leaving the original floor intact is an option...the floor still has the pitch (?) that you see on old outside porches to help the rain run off. it would be nice to actually have a level floor since I moved the outside door to make that area part of the heated house. out there is also where I want to put the doggie door. using a suggestion in an earlier post I'm thinking under the window.

Cripple means to place a new board along side the existing joist to pick up the load.  This is done to avoid tearing up and existing floor.
