Fw: [DIY] RE: prolonging shelf life.

Howdy Friends,

I haven't posted in many months due to sevear deperssion and some other medical issues.  However, I do read all of the emails that I can to see whats going on in the real world outside.

In this subjedt in sealing paint of any type of liquide that we all use for so many different projects, the best answer to the matter from many paint contractors, painters and paint companies is to as follows.

Clean what paint that may be in the lid set rim with your paint brush.
Put the lid on and them step upon the lid with a foot to apply all of your body weight to firmly close it.
Then where ever you place the remainder of the can TURN it up-side down.
This will seal the lid from any air entering the can and ONLY the top paint which( which is at the bottom of the can) will stop any
paint from harding on top when you open the can.

Yes just as Dale S has stated.  I have worked around so many painters, controctors, and myseld talked with paint companies about this very subject.  The paint compaines I'm talking about is the company that make the product NOT some sales person at the store thats selling you the product. (Most of them are about as smart as the can the paint is coming in.)

My solution has been to store all my paint cans on their lids, then the skin is on the bottom in which case , who cares.
If you are worried about the seal place a NEW piece of seran wrap under the lid before you close the can.
The first thing I do after opening a new can of paint or varnish is to use an awl and punch 4 holes around the lid to allow liquid trapped in the seal grove to drain back into the can.
This prevents a hydraulic lock which is what prevents cans sealing in the first place prevent the cans sealing.

Even if you are going to store your used cans right side up, always let the set for a few minutes in the inverted position to help seal the lids
