My solution has been to store all my paint cans on their lids, then the skin is on the bottom in which case , who cares.
If you are worried about the seal place a NEW piece of seran wrap under the lid before you close the can.
The first thing I do after opening a new can of paint or varnish is to use an awl and punch 4 holes around the lid to allow liquid trapped in the seal grove to drain back into the can.
This prevents a hydraulic lock which is what prevents cans sealing in the first place prevent the cans sealing.
Even if you are going to store your used cans right side up, always let the set for a few minutes in the inverted position to help seal the lids
