I had a bathroom "cupboard" like this in a previous house. Since it was on
the wall next to the hallway, I had the bathroom side closed off and a door
put in from the hallway side. It became a broom/vacuum closet. Much more
efficient use of the space, and much easier to access whatever was in it.
Because my family had a habit of acquiring too much bathroom *stuff*, I had
the storage space reduced to a cabinet 12" by 12", just big enough to set a
folded bath towel on top, and then three 12" by 12" floating shelves above
the cabinet. With no *room* for a bazillion bottles of shampoo,
conditioners and the like, there *were* no bazillion bottles of such. I
also had the huge vanity pulled out and replaced with a pedestal sink.
Again, with no place to store extra stuff, there was no extra stuff.
The challenge is to think outside the box. Can there be access to this
space from another direction?
Personally, I dislike shelves over 12" deep. Too easy to "lose" stuff
behind other things.
