There are definite safety issues here.
Wear no rings while you work. A short with a tool will
melt your ring & finger immediately. This acid will irritate
skin. Dishpan gloves work for sensitive folks. I like to have
a qt of water & a box of opened baking soda at hand to
counteract acid in case of an ass-ident. Glasses are
always a plus.
No flames or sparks. The battery vapors are explosive.
Unconnect the negative 1st!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And reconnect it last!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fancy tool? Ok. Or a nail file. Rub it around the "cylinder"
of the terminal... not just in a spot and then move on. Sand
paper for the interior of the female connector. (Wire end.)
Works on the male also. Don't take much off!!!
Copious amounts of grease added will prevent this
in the future. You MAY add before reconnection, as
excess grease DOES all squeeze out, strangely.
Vasoline is somewhat inadequate.
I have had 4 Sears-best Diehards each last ~18 months,
all with 5 yr guarantees. Granted, this was in a Van, &
they are hard on batteries. In a quick test, they appear
ok. An overnight test is required. Some cells short.
A very slight charge die-electrically separates the cells,
briefly. The battery works fine, until sitting while you
are at work. Then you are back to 5 cells instead of 6.
