Objects made with porcelain clay, or slip, come out of the kiln with a matte finish, not the glass smooth feel we associate with porcelain. I clean it first with cleanser and a toothbrush, then use the flap sander to polish it. Continue using finer grades of sandpaper till you achieve that smooth as glass finish. Then it's ready to be painted. The objects I was working on are much smaller than I usually have so couldn't use the flap sander.
