Hi Joyce;

This is why it is always a good idea to put aside your
packrat concerns, and when getting new carpeting, always
store away am ample sized bundle of scraps. I recommend
keeping virtually all of what is left over. Due to the
general nature of carpeting, it is a relatively easy task
to simply replace an area, without the seams showing. But,
that is only possible if you have the scraps to replace it
with. Unfortunately, many people seem to think that it is
silly or more extreme, a sign of an emotional problem, to
prepare for such likely future events as the stain on your
off-white carpeting, and discourage keeping such things
around. Store it in the garage, basement or attic. It is
worth more than most things we keep with no future use.

Now, for your current situation.....

How big is the area? Is there some isolated area of
carpeting, perhaps separated/defined by a step, passageway,
or some other distinguishing factor, that you could remove
the carpet from? In a worst case, if you have settled on
your furniture arrangement, you might remove an area under
a couch or other place where it would not be noticeable.
You can replace that hidden area with the best match you
can find (or not). Use the removed piece as an identical
match, to replace your highly visible stained area.
(or just put a potted plant over it ;O)
