If you are careful, you can remove the glass from the putty outside.
There is a video by Ron Hazelton at

When using the blow torch or heat gun, keep the heat moving, so as not to get a concentration at one spot. That prevents further breakage. You can use a triangular scraper to remove the putty. Be careful of the glaziers points, so you don't snag a finger.
It's much easier to NOT remove the sashes, if you can reach the outside from the ground. Otherwise, you must carefully cut through the old paint with a knife. Again, the heat will make the job easier- not enough to set the wood on fire.

Is there any way to replace the glass pane in a window WITHOUT removing the
sash?
I have to replace the glass in a window. However, the window sashes (it's a
double hung) are painted *and* nailed shut. No, I didn't do it; the house
came that way. The paint is thick enough on the window that trying to
remove the sash will do more damage than good - meaning having to replace
the whole window.
Ideas anyone?
Thanks in advance.
