Re: [DIY] Cat barrier

If you can find a piece of plexiglass that is 5" wider than the ledge, put something on the P-glass to stabilize it- like a basket of artificial flowers and also load it up with something that will make a lot of noise when it falls.

When the cat jumps up and tips the glass bringing the basket o down and the noisy things inside, this ought to break her of it quickly.
They also hate the smell of wintergreen but then you would be smelling it too.

We are having a problem thinking of a way to protect a new cat when we decide to let him roam the house. One problem is that when entering the house, there are two stairways, one goes up and the other goes down. Next to the stairway that goes up, there is essentially a wall, and this wall is almost 8 feet high in the entry way, and 3.5+ at the top of the stairway. On the top of this wall, there is a board about 8 inches wide, running the length of the wall. So, when in the living room, the cat can jump on top of this wall and potentially fall 8 feet onto the entry way. (In fact a cat once did this, tempted by the interesting window over the entry door, but no shelf to stand on in front of it. He survived, but was not very active for a few days.) We've thought of sticky stuff or tin cans to make him not want to get on top the wall. It seems as if that would rely too much on luck for him not to fall anyway. Also thought of an attached book case on top of the wall or a set of decorative windows, but wish we could think of something more simple. Right now there is a love seat in front of the wall, in the living room--no good place to put it but maybe could be considered. Any suggestions appreciated!!!!
