[DIY] Kitchen Sink Drain

In my kitchen there is a double sink. The drain comes from the garbage disposer, then angles straight down.  The second sink drain joins into this downspout at a 90* angle.  The drain lines are all 1 1/2" pvc.  The piece of pipe where these two drains come together has an interior piece that splits the interior flow on an angle and actually reduces the flow to 1/2" for each drain line.

The problem is that this constriction in the pipe prevents the garbage disposer from clearing fast enough. The result is a solid blockage inside the drain pipe at the point where the drain is forcibly constricted. The other sink continues to flow because the join is below the blockage.

I cannot for the life of me understand why a plumber would constrict the drainage flow to 1/2".  But, is the problem really the pipe or is there something wrong with the function of the garbage disposer? I'm quite tired of dismantling the drains in order to remove food from this one section of drain pipe.
