The 2 ft by 3 ft hole in the floor is now repaired. I was over thinking the
whole problem and just needed to get in and do it. Only two difficult
spots. The first was fitting the little support "joists" in the hole,
simply because the existing framing boards I attached them to weren't plumb
from top to bottom. Meant a little more cutting to get the new boards to
fit, but they're in and secure. The other difficulty came when nailing up
the joist support straps for the center support board. The old wood joists
to which they're nailed is SO hard/dense that my 10d nails kept bending. I
did, however, finally get them all secured.
So now, except for the 'dip' in the floor (didn't bring it up to the
existing floor level because that will be changing when I rip out a couple
layers of flooring to get to the hardwood underneath), it's now safe to walk
from one room to another. No "quick trip to the basement." <g>
Now to build that partition wall.
