Popcorn ceilings are fairly easily removed using water and a wide putty knife, however once they have been painted over it is an entirely different story. If you decide to paint over one of these relics from the past, make sure you wish to keep it for the duration. It is also best to paint using a spray gun as the popcorn comes off and makes a real mess on brushes and rollers, with globs that are often redeposited in random but conspicuous locations about the ceiling.
