The way electricians do it is to pull out the wire from the center, as you are doing, and walk away from the roll(pulling the wire with you). As you pull the wire out, put one hand about 3 feet back on the wire and the other about 1 foot back then twirl the 1 foot back hand in a circle to make the wire unwind. Kind of like you see a cowboy twirl a lasso rope. That's the trick of the trade.
